Saturn’s Moon Plays Hide-and-Seek With Cassini

Taken during the Cassini spacecraft’s October 1 flyby of Saturn’s ice-spewing moon, this image – released today – shows a crescent-lit Enceladus with southern geysers in action… and the much smaller Epimetheus peeking out from behind!

The 70-mile (113-km) -wide Epimetheus is dwarfed by its larger sibling Enceladus, which is 313 miles (504 km) in diameter… about the width of the state of Arizona.

One of the most reflective objects in the solar system, Enceladus appears to be casting some reflected light onto Epimetheus as well. (Image processors at the Cassini Imaging Lab have brightened the moons by a factor of 1.8 relative to the rings in order to bring out detail.)

Some bright clumps of material can also be seen orbiting within Saturn’s rings at upper left, possibly stirred up by the movement of the shepherd moon Pan.

Please either fire the developer that created the most annoying popup ever created in the history of the Internet, remove it completely or fix those bugs so it stops bugging me with useless recommendation of links I already read and refuses to stay hidden no matter what I press. Porn sites are less intrusive than this popup.

    2. I like the recommendation and have to disagree about it being in the way. It only pops up when you scroll down to the comments and then you can easily minimize it to the right-bottom-corner. If you minimize it, it stays minimized so I personally can’t see the big problem.

  2. I don’t see those popups on account of NoScript in FireFox environment.

    But as for new site problems, the home page script can’t seem to sum up the correct total of article comments for me. (Perhaps because of NoScript?) First it showed 0 comments starting a few weeks back; now it shows a too small sum; it does OK on the archived posts.

    1. I’ve had the same problem with the article comments totals (this was long before I started using NoScript for that recent “recommended reading” popup). I still get inaccurate numbers for article comments (usually too low). No probs with archived posts though, as you noted.

      1. I’ve also encountered an issue with article comment totals, typically underreporting the number of comments associated with an article, as Jon points out. I’m also annoyed by the Recommended for you pop up. Is anyone listening? This is at least the tenth comment I’ve seen regarding this issue. I’ve tried to opt out, as well as install ad block, and neither seem to solve the problem. I’m using IE as my browser.

        Well, dude, that’s your problem; I only use IE when I want to see bloody adverts! Also, AdBlock does not work with IE.

      3. Thanks dude, but I don’t have a choice as it’s a work computer. No issues with my tablet or smartphone.
