Obama and Uhura Go Vulcan

Obama is definitely going for the geek vote with this image, which actress Nichelle Nichols posted on her Twitter account. As one commenter mentioned, the Birthers will probably now claim Obama was born on Vulcan.

  1. Posing with Nichelle Nichols is nice and all, but I’m really looking for someone who won’t gut NASA’s budget…

    1. If I remember correctly, Obama recommended an increase the NASA budget. Congress passed a budget with a substantial cut. I know this was true for many areas of science funding but maybe someone else can correct or back me up on NASA.

      1. You remember correctly, Kyle. The Christian far right and their anti science agenda would gut NASA entirely if they thought they could get away with it…..

      2. Thanks for the insult Sparrow-brain. A lot of us conservative Christians are all for NAA and science exploration. A lot of Nasa astronauts were and are conservative Christians. Just because we believe in God and don’t want the liberal-left trampling the Constitution and stripping our rights in their march toward Socialism, doesn’t mean we don’t believe in the advancements of science.

      3. Thanks for the personal insult, Dennis. I was merely pointing out that the majority of the Christian right politicians, including one of the contenders for the GOP Presidential nomination, are less interested in science than they are in promoting their Christian ideals. And, don’t you mean to say a lot of you Christians are all for the NRA and oil exploration? If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck……

    1. My sentiments, exactly, Nick!
I notice there are an increasing number of politically motivated articles being posted here.
There are uncountable sites throughout the Internet that will treat us to meaningless entertainment, like this.

If someone doesn’t get back in focus, I fear this site will start losing relevance…

      1. Very true! I don’t mind politics on this site, but only if it is directly related to astronomy. I especially enjoy listening to Neil deGrasse Tyson’s opinions. This interview with him explains to the average American clearly why we should be investing in NASA: http://video.pbs.org/video/2215151953

  4. Nichelle Nichols has maintained a significant link to NASA and space exploration for decades. She volunteered her time in a special project with NASA to recruit minority and female personnel for the space agency. Those recruited include Dr. Sally Ride, the first American female astronaut, and United States Air Force Colonel Guion Bluford, the first African-American astronaut, as well as Dr. Judith Resnik and Dr. Ronald McNair, who both flew successful missions during the Space Shuttle program before their unfortunate deaths in the Space Shuttle Challenger accident. Recruits also included Charles Bolden, the current NASA administrator, and Lori Garver, the current Deputy Administrator.

Her other work indirectly helped recruit other members of the Astronaut Corp, such as former NASA astronaut Mae Jemison, who cited Nichols’s role of Lieutenant Uhura as her inspiration for wanting to become an astronaut.

An enthusiastic advocate of space exploration, Nichols has served since the mid-1980s on the Board of Governors of the National Space Society, a nonprofit, educational space advocacy organization founded by Dr. Wernher von Braun.

Yeah… an article about Nichols shouldn’t be posted on a website about NASA, space exploration and astronomy… right? …

    1. The article says she is an actress. No mention is made of her connection to NASA.

  6. Not one comment about episode 45 (I’m making that up) entitled “And the Children Shall Lead” where the kids make Uhura look 99 years old? (That part is true) Looks like life is finally imitating art. Geeeeezz
