How Could We Fix Gravity?

I finally caught up with the rest of the space journalist community and watched the new Gravity movie last night.

I absolutely loved it. It was by far the best movie I’ve seen this year, and I think one of the best space movies ever made.

The attention to detail on so many aspects of spaceflight was heartening: the cramped conditions of the space station, the perspective of the Earth, the lack of sound, the realistic physics (mostly).

WARNING – Spoilers Ahead

I believe that good art benefits from constraints. And in this case, director Alfonso Cuarón gave himself the constraint of a realistic portrayal of space, and it paid off in so many ways.

Except when he didn’t. There are a pile of unscientific moments that happen in the movie, that I think could have been easily fixed in the script stage.

It would have been amazing to hear Phil Plait or Neil deGrasse Tyson scratching their heads, unable to find a single scientific flaw.

So let’s fix Gravity

I’ll go first.

Remember I said spoilers? Here come the spoilers.

Stone can’t hold on to Kowalski and he’s forced to detach himself – As it was portrayed in the movie, and noted by Phil, he had no force pulling him away from Stone, so she should have been able to easily tug him back. But if the station was rotating quickly enough, there would be outward centripetal force.

People have speculated on the internet that it was rotating, and the background stars are shifting. But if that was the case, loose ropes and cables would be extending out from the station. And things wouldn’t have been floating so freely inside the station.

Solution:

As the astronauts are approaching the ISS, they noticed that the first Soyuz had already been used to abandon the station – what if they gave the station a kick as they departed in a rush? So maybe Kowalski could have noticed that the station was spinning. And the mess of parachute lines would have been taut, reflecting that.

That would have made hanging onto the lines more difficult, and would have been enough force to tear Kowalski away.

Your turn. What was a problem in the story, and how could it have been fixed without seriously ruining the movie?

I posted this topic over on Google+ and got some great suggestions for topics:

  • How could you get a debris cascade going so quickly?
  • Shouldn’t airlocks open inward?
  • Why did a fire start at the exact moment Stone gets on board ISS?
  • How could you get from Hubble to ISS to Tiangong? They’re on different orbital trajectories?
  • Why would communications satellites get taken out? They’re at a much higher altitude.
  • Why wasn’t Stone wearing traditional astronaut undergarments and, uh, a diaper?
  • Why didn’t Stone’s hair float in microgravity?

What scientific inconsistencies did you see, and how would you fix them?

What’s the catch?
Are you a skeptical person, overwhelmed with SPAM, and looking for the catch?

I can respect that.

Companies looking to promote their latest books, movies, etc, send me free stuff all the time. It fills my bookshelves and I never have time to use it all. Instead of hoarding it myself, I’d rather just reward Universe Today readers with free stuff.

Companies are able to promote their new space-related products to you; you have a chance to win free stuff; I get to clean out my bookshelves. Win-win-win.

Trying Out a New Commenting System

Wall of SPAM. Photo Freezelight/Flickr

Hi everyone, I’m just performing a little experiment with Universe Today. We were previously using Disqus for comments on Universe Today, but I got a lot of concerns from readers.

So, I’m trying out a new system called Comments Evolved. This integrates comments from Google+, Facebook, Disqus and even WordPress if we want. I’m just enabling the Google+ version, because… everyone’s got a Google account.

If you want, I can enable the Facebook, Disqus and WordPress versions as well once I know this is working.

So why am I doing this? Why am I continuously making your life difficult with all this technology switcheroo?

Because managing comments on a public blog is like working at a SPAM factory. Behind the scenes here, we spend a MASSIVE amount of time killing SPAM, banning spambots, etc, etc. Not only do Nancy and I have to do it, but we actually have a few readers of Universe Today who we’ve deputized to help kill SPAM. And lots gets through.

In fact… we had turned off comments for posts older than 14 days because it was completely impossible to stay on top of the SPAM for all 15,000 articles within Universe Today.

So, in theory, by switching to this system… all the comments will have to go through Google’s SPAM filters first. You as users can identify comments as SPAM, and get them removed from the site, and teach Google how to do this better.

If it doesn’t work, we’ll just hack it out and go back to something else.

Feel free to drop me an email at [email protected] if you notice any bugs or have any further suggestions.

Check Out Some of the Best Space Writing on Google+: Brian Koberlein

Brian Koberlein is a professor at Rochester Institute of Technology. When he’s not teaching, though, he’s communicating science and education on Google+ of all places. Instead of doing a traditional blog, he’s posting article after article directly onto G+. He’s gathered a huge following on the social network, and a level of interaction that would make any blogger jealous.

Here’s an example of a post he did a couple of days ago on black hole thermodynamics.

And here’s one on detecting the atmospheres of extrasolar planets

Oh, Google+ now gives us the ability to embed posts onto our website, so I wanted to see what that looked like too. 🙂

Anyway, check out Brian’s writing, circle him on Google+, and watch his occasional appearances on the Weekly Space Hangout.

For anyone who’s considering a field as a science journalist, I highly recommend you follow in Brian’s footsteps. Don’t wait for someone to give you permission to write and communicate science. Just get writing. People will notice, and with a large enough readership and body of work, you can get a job anywhere.

Import Fraser’s Super Science Circle to Understand Google+

Many people are still having a tough time wrapping their head around Google+. They go there and none of their friends are around. To solve this problem, I’ve created my Super Science Circle. This is a pre-made circle containing 400 people who actively post on Google+ about science topics. There are some big names there, including astronauts, professors, researchers, students, journalists, and lots of science enthusiasts. I carefully curate this list to make sure each and every person on the list is active and regularly posts about science.

So, if you want to understand Google+, and get over the idea that it’s a ghost town, all you need to do is import this circle and you’ll have a ready-made community overflowing with amazing content.

1. Click here to access the shared circle on Google+

2. Click “View Shared Circle”

3. Name your new circle and then click “Create or add to circles”

Remember: You Can Always Remove the Ads from Universe Today

I’ve had a few people complain to me about inappropriate and obnoxious ads on Universe Today, so I just wanted to remind everyone that’s it’s quick and easy to remove all the advertising on Universe Today – forever. For a one-time donation of any amount, no matter how small, I’ll switch you over to a member account where you don’t see any ads on the website, forever.

For all of you who have already donated, thank you very much. Your donations have demonstrated how important space news is to you, and how much you appreciate all things we’ve been doing to keep you informed about what’s going on… out there.

I’m really happy with this compromise. I know that there are lots of services that want to ding you a couple of bucks a month, and it starts to wear you down after a while, so I really like this idea of a one-time donation.

I’d also love to explore some further ideas on how we can give even more value to the people who decide to become members, so you’ve got some ideas, I’d love to hear them. Super secret member hangouts, giveaways? I’m open to any cool ideas.

The content on Universe Today will always remain free and accessible to all, however.

So, if you want to remove the ads, and show your support for Universe Today, click here.

Thanks for your support!

Google+ Documentary about the Virtual Star Parties

As you probably know, we’ve been holding Virtual Star Parties every Sunday night, where we pull together live feeds from multiple telescopes around the world and broadcast them into a live Google+ hangout. We’ve done dozens of them now, showcasing the Moon, many of the planets, and so many deep sky objects. The response of this has been overwhelming, helping people without telescopes or terrible weather a chance to see the night sky from the comfort of their home.

We’ve held special events, broadcasting the recent solar eclipse and transit of Venus right into a Google+ Hangout. During the 6-hour marathon transit of Venus, we had almost 7,000 people joining us live.

What you didn’t know was that Google was secretly creating a documentary featuring the Virtual Star Party team. A camera crew from Google flew out to North Carolina to film +Mike Phillips, to Edwardsville to meet with +Dr. Pamela Gay, here to capture me and the family on Vancouver Island and then down to Los Angeles to meet with +Gary Gonella.

The final version of this documentary was released at the big Google I/O keynote address in San Francisco on June 27, 2012. And seriously, they did an amazing job. A huge thanks to everyone at Google+ for providing this platform to give us this ability and thanks to +Jessica Brillhart and +Owen Katz for dedicating so much time to producing this documentary. If you still think Google+ is a ghost town, I hope this will help you realize it’s one of the most vibrant social networks happening on the internet right now.

We hold these Virtual Star Parties every Sunday night, once it gets dark on the West Coast of North America (9pm Pacific in the summer). If want to watch it live, just circle +Fraser Cain on Google+, or circle the +Virtual Star Party page. Then you’ll see the hangout when it happens in the stream.

Remove All Ads from Universe Today

Donate any amount, no matter how small, and remove all ads from Universe Today for life.
Want to show your support for Universe Today, and improve your experience on the site? Become a member! For a one-time donation, you’ll become a member of Universe Today, helping to underwrite the space journalism we’ve been bringing you since 1999. And as a special thanks, we’ll remove all the advertising, so you’ll see a completely clean, uncluttered view of the website. You’ll get your news faster, without all those distracting ads.

And you’ll help us expand our team of journalists and report the news for you.

P.S. No donation is necessary for schools, kids shouldn’t see ads.

What Does Membership Get You?
As a member you’ll get:

  • No ads anywhere on the site.
  • No ads in the daily email newsletter.
  • The satisfaction of knowing you’re contributing directly to the best space-journalist team on the internet

The only way we can keep Universe Today running is through advertising. Without the ads, we’d shut down the site. But we know that many of you would be perfectly happy to pitch in to help us keep covering stories. We could run the site completely on donation too, but honestly, advertising is the model that makes the most sense to cover our expenses.

As I think of new ideas to sweeten the pot, like giveaways, member meetups, and special offers, we’ll release them to members.

How Long Does the Membership Last?

It’s a lifetime membership. One donation, and you’re set for life – never see another ad on Universe Today. With advances in robots and computer technology, you might be able to live until the end of the Universe, so that’s a great deal.

What If You Don’t Donate?

I’m not planning to create some kind of paywall; non-members will always be able to read any article in the site. There won’t be a culture of have and have-nots, of space and space-nots. There’ll just be the advertisees and the non-advertisees.

Oh, and you’ll probably never learn the secret space handshake (if anyone wants to invent a space handshake, I’d be grateful).

How Much Should You Donate?

As much, or as little as you like. As much as the value you think you’re going to get from Universe Today over the rest of your natural life (and also in your life-extended robot body).

Ready to Donate?

1. Register a free account on Universe Today. You might already have one.

Universe Today’s Tumblr Blog

I’ve finally figured out what to do with all the browser tabs that I have open, but never get around to using: Tumblr. Our new Tumblr blog is a slush pile of links, photos and videos that we just don’t have the time or energy to incorporate into the main Universe Today blog. I’ll warn you, it could easily be 20+ items a day just dumped in there, so if Universe Today is already overwhelming, that’ll be like drinking from a firehose.

Just to let you know, I’m still wrapping my brain around Tumblr, so if you have any suggestions on how to use it better, I’m all ears.
